Dream It*Be It Career Mentoring for Girls

Soroptimist International of Lake Oswego/West Linn completed their first "Dream It*Be It" program, in conjunction with Arts & Technology High School in Wilsonville.

This is a new program for Soroptimist International, developing Career Support for Girls.  This seven session course was prototyped with three young ladies.  It provided the girls with access to professional role models, career education and resources to live their dreams. The topics included career opportunities, setting and achieving goals, overcoming obstacles to success and how to move forward after setbacks.

Each of the students enjoyed learning about what inner strength they had, how to go about making decisions, staying focused and making commitments for themselves.  The club developed a resource book for them, to be able to reach out for additional information, details about the job market, grants available to them, and career programs.  They developed a dream board, which brough tout their personalities and an opportunity to share their inner strengths and talents with others.

In conjunction with the school and Soroptimists, the students received high school credit for attending this class.  This was a great incentive for the girls to take the class, as they gave up their afternoons twice a week for four and a half week course.

The committee members were rewarded with closer relationships amongst each other.  They learned trust, support, more respect and appreciation of what the program brings.

A special thank you to the SI LOWL Dream It*Be It committee, including Connie Kemp, Cheri Weaver, Brenda Anderson, and Nancy VanZanten.  The club would like to thank The Arts & Technology School fo rtheir support and partnership with this program.
